Online Blackjack
Online Blackjack originated in France and is without
doubt the most popular table game around today. The reason
for this success is that online blackjack is not just a game
of chance. A skilled player can reduce the house edge close
to zero using basic strategy. A card counter can eliminate
the house edge completely. However, be warned that card counting
only works in a land-based casino and cannot be used playing
online blackjack.
Your goal in online blackjack is to draw a hand that
is higher than the dealer's hand, without going over 21. We
have summarized a couple of rule variations in the following
table:
Rule
|
Explanation
|
Insurance
|
If the dealer has an ace, you can take insurance against
the dealer hitting a Blackjack, by placing a side bet.
If the dealer gets Blackjack you will be paid 2 to 1
on the side bet.
|
Surrender
|
Surrendering your hand means you lose half of your
original bet but the play for the round stops.
|
Splitting pairs
|
When your first two cards are the same, you can split
them into two hands. The original bet is doubled.
|
Doubling down
|
Doubling down means you double your bet and you will
only be dealt one more card.
|
Blackjack
|
If your first two cards are an Ace plus a 10, Jack,
Queen or King, you have Blackjack and you are paid 3
to 2.

The best strategy for online blackjack depends on the rules
of the particular variant your playing. Stanford Wong has
developed a generic basic strategy in his book Professional
Blackjack, that is appropriate for the most common rule sets.
Another book, Basic Blackjack, by the same author, also contains
basic strategies for different sets of rules of online blackjack.
